We learned a lot (we think!) and have big hopes for 2011. Over the winter, we tilled in all the leaves from our 2 huge trees, added some nitrogen, and let them compost. Then in April, we added a good helping of Oakdell Organic Poultry Compost (the good stuff! and doesn't smell at ALL) and planted spinach & snap pea seeds:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lSIs2fEZa9o/Tge60BjDZOI/AAAAAAAAA1w/3hgoQlC2xGg/s320/110407.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5622668062726776034" />
April 7 2011

We went on vacation for the next couple of weeks. It rained enough for the tiny spinach seeds, but none of the peas came up. Oh well.

The next couple of weeks we added a drip irrigation system and a lot more vegetables:
Tomatoes - 4 Roma, 1 Early Girl, 1 Sweet Cherry, 1 Beefsteak)
Peppers - 4 Bell, 2 Cayenne, 2 Jalapeno, 2 Anaheim
Onions - 1 Vidalia, 1 red
Garlic - 1 garlic
Squash - 1 yellow crookneck, 1 zucchini
Herbs - 1 sweet basil, 1 cilantro
Cucumber - burpless (seeds)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G7Z5Wfr4SuU/Tge88MUsm-I/AAAAAAAAA14/RnKBR82fZ1A/s320/110522.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5622670402081561570" />
May 22 2011

Note the grass clippings covering everything. We could pick it all 2x / week, but we don't, so the leaves get monstrously huge. It's finally starting to bolt (June 26th) so we'll probably only get another 1 or 2 pickings:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sZRqAV_oYkw/Tge-vYNe5PI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/NoNPGPSbPDM/s320/110626.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5622672380957484274" />
June 26 2011

The tomatoes and peppers are now flowering. So is the cilantro, so we'll let it go to seed (coriander) and figure out what to do with that later on. The peppers and basil aren't growing nearly as much as everything else, but we expect them to now that it's heating up outside.

More updates to follow!

Portrait of an Anniversary

Sunday, May 16, 2010:

Between church meetings and dinner with the neighbors, we paused to exchange cards and appreciate the two blissful years we've shared together as husband and wife.

Then, after yet another noble but futile attempt at reading a good book, Laura succumbed, curled up next to the open window, and took a well-deserved nap. Yeah, call me crazy, but I really love getting out there and putting a shovel and pickaxe to good use.

It's been a little over a year now, and I thought I'd document the progress. Here's a picture of our front yard on May 12, 2008:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 228px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Fnl9-jn_D_0/ShxG31NDN1I/AAAAAAAAAlo/op5kytT_yAs/s400/House.May.12.08.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340221183143130962" />It was a neglected, overgrown mess. So, since then, I've:
* removed 2 large trees * overhauled the sprinkler system * built a retaining wall * removed all the ivy * pruned a LOT of tree and shrub branches * carved some definition into the edge of the grass * removed lots of weeds, then covered the non-grass areas with mulch * planted new shrubs & flowers * revitalized the grass

And here's how we're looking now, about a year later, on May 20, 2009:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Fnl9-jn_D_0/ShxHH-uSmEI/AAAAAAAAAlw/OcOhCmrweWA/s400/House.May.20.09.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340221460576376898" />I still have a few things left to do, but we're pretty happy with how it's turned out so far. I figure with the retaining wall, sprinkler parts, and plants, I've probably put about $500 into it. Money well spent, if you ask me :)

San Fran & May 16th (with pictures!)

We did it!

When we were fixin' to get married, a lot of people gave us advice to the effect of "the first year is the hardest, but it gets better after that."

Well, after one year of 99% bliss and 1% "let's never again play against each other in Scrabble," we're convinced that those people must have mistaken marriage with prison, or maybe a mission. We've had a blast.

So after scoring round-trip tickets for $80 and an equally sweet deal on a hotel, we took off to San Francisco to celebrate our first anniversary.

We flew there Friday afternoon, found out about the helpful yelp.com from a friendly local on the train to downtown, rode the tourist-laden trolley to Fisherman's Wharf, and dragged our suitcases a couple of blocks to our hotel.

Fortunately for hungry us, the self-proclaimed "Best Pizza in San Francisco" was right around the corner, so we dropped off our stuff and dove in.

Saturday we took the sage advise of my sister and rented bikes to ride around town and across the Golden Gate Bridge. Thousands of people in (and out) of crazy costumes with plenty of alcohol . . . and for once in our lives, we were the weird ones people stared at because we were (1) sober and (2) modestly clothed. Caused by cold temperatures mixing with smog. From the inversion.

Today I read two articles:

1.Trapped Clouds and Hidden Sun cause Anticyclonic Gloom
(from a London newspaper)
[Summary: Are you depressed lately? It's because of the inversion.]

2. Jets in the Living Room? Blame Inversion
"Inversions act . . . as a sort of reflective ceiling off which low frequency sound waves can bounce" thus trapping and amplifying noises from, for example, loud cars.
(from the University of Alaska Fairbanks)
[Summary: Are you suffering from headaches, overly sensitive hearing, or edgy temperament due to loud noises? That's because of the inversion.]

Have you seen a mirage lately? The inversion. Picked up more FM radio stations than normal? Another effect of the inversion.

Anyway, since it seems like everybody I know is blaming everything on the inversion lately, I figure I might as well jump on that bandwagon.

So today I told a joke that everybody laughed at because of the inversion. Yesterday I ate some ice cream because of the inversion. I was speeding to work, but if I got pulled over I knew the officer would understand that it was because of the inversion. The stock market took a huge dive yesterday because of the inversion, but today it shot back up due to the inversion.

And I wrote another blog entry.

Because of the inversion.

The Clean-up Conundrum

So, every so often my thoughts travel to random, mundane places, and I am choosing to share one of these trips with all of you (more accurately, all three of you out there-thanks for visiting).

Up until a few years ago, if one needed to purchase paper towels, the only decision to make at the grocery store was whether to go with Brawny (helloooo-can you say pretty attractive for a paper towel illustration!) or to sensibly select the store brand (I'm oversimplifying here, but humor me). This was typically an easily enough decision to make (Brawny man, duh!), and I'm sure not a whole lot of people gave much more thought to the paper towel choice after it was safely placed on the holder.

Fast forward a few years. In addition to the plethora of paper towel options that have been added in the interim, namely brands, prints, styles, single or double ply, the mammoth pack, or the I'm-single-and-only-need-one-roll-at-a-time version, a new contestant has entered the ring: the select-a-size paper towel.

"Oh how lovely!" some of you thought to yourselves happily upon first sight of it. "Now I have the option of using just a little bit of paper towel when I have an oh-so-small mess to clean up, and not wasting the other half of my perforated sheet!" Seems like a good idea, right? Well, not so fast, I say.

What about those of us who would like to use a small amount of paper towel, but not pay twice as much for about half the amount? What do we do? (I just love that they try to trick us by mentioning the number of sheets in those rolls, btw.)

Well, unfortunately, I don't think there is a good answer for this injustice. I have yet to see a generic brand of select-a-size paper towel on the market. (If any of you know otherwise, please kindly inform me.) Instead, I'm stuck doing the same thing I've done for some time now: ripping a perfectly good perforated sheet in half to use after washing my hands, because I don't need a full sheet and can't justify wasting half of it.

Is anyone out there feeling the same way? Or are you the one who comes to our house, sees the jaggedly ripped sheet and thinks, "Poor things, they probably can't afford Brawny's Select-A-Size"?

Oh well, I guess the hard-hit economy affects some of us in more noticeable ways than others.

No Night Dome Light? Right?

12 years ago I turned 16 and found independence and confusion. All thanks to that lovely little laminated license.

The first time I was driving with my friends at night, one of them turned on the dome light.

My immediate reaction was obviously to yell "Turn it off - we'll get in a wreck!"

Because for some reason, that's what my parents always said. I grew up believing that if a light is on inside the car at night, then the driver can't see outside. So you can turn the light on for the same length of time you'd be comfortable riding your bike with your eyes closed, if you will.

Then something strange happened. I could SEE. In fact, I could see everything just as clearly as I could when the dome light was off. Like riding a bike with your eyes open, if you will.

So what's the deal? Did older cars have super-advanced glass that reacted to interior light by transforming into a black wall? Did my parents just not want us to see anything all those years? Were they ashamed of us kids to the point that they didn't want anyone to see inside our car?

I still haven't figured it out. But rest assured that I spent the remainder of my teenage years driving with the dome light on, 24/7. Because I was independent.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lillywrite.blogspot.com/2008/11/no-night-dome-light-right.html' title='No Night Dome Light? (Sorry, haters.)

As I went to find some Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce (an obvious staple), I couldn't help but notice the two different food section signs hanging above the aisle:

"Hispanic Food" and "Latino Food"

What? Really? Ok, that's new. Well, I figured I'd get to the bottom of it and figure out what was going on.

After 10 seconds of intensive field study, I had ascertained the following:

Hispanic Food is apparently what we call Salsa. That's all.
I imagine someone from Spain might happen upon that section while visiting the tourist-attraction supercenter, and think, "Oh yeah, there's our food. Exactly like what we have back in our Hispanic homeland."

The Latino Food section is a bit more diverse, including the likes of Taco Bell brand refried beans, Taco Bell brand taco shells, Taco Bell brand hot sauce, and a bunch of stuff "Made in M&*!^%"

I left the store with a renewed disappointment in society, and a couple of questions:

What is the real difference between Latino and Hispanic?

Where can I find the freaking Mexican food??
